At the end of 2024, we received a remarkable assignment from MatZwart Productions, a video production commissioned by the Dutch Government Real Estate Agency (Rijksvastgoedbedrijf). The project focused on the naval base in Den Helder, where dikes were being reinforced and new infrastructure constructed. It was an impressive project set against a striking backdrop, featuring a submarine being launched into the water as its standout moment.

Our task was to capture drone footage that showcased the large-scale construction work, the terrain, and the submarine in a powerful, cinematic way. It was a challenging assignment, not only because of the location, but especially due to the strict access procedures and extreme weather conditions on the filming day.
Obtaining the necessary accreditations and permits required thorough preparation. Prior to filming, we had to request access to the military-restricted area, which involved submitting a site permit application to the Ministry of Defence. In addition, we were required to obtain a special exemption to operate within the military CTR (Controlled Traffic Region). [Read more about getting premission to fly in a Dutch CTR’s]
When the filming day arrived, a strong northwesterly storm was blowing. Wind force 8, with gusts exceeding 75 kilometers per hour, made flying a serious challenge. In consultation with the production team and the safety coordinator, we decided to conduct the flights in phases, using specially selected drones capable of withstanding heavy winds. Our crew was fully prepared, featuring an experienced P.I.C. (Pilot in Command) and G.O. (Gimbal Operator).
The conditions were rough, but that made the footage all the more spectacular. As the submarine was slowly moved toward the water, we were in the air to capture the event from above. With adjusted gimbal settings and precise flight planning, we managed to film the submarine smoothly and steadily, without compromising safety or image quality.

The footage has since been incorporated into a webpage featuring multiple videos about the redevelopment of the naval base. The client was highly impressed with the results. The large number of shots, delivered quickly and with technical precision, combined craftsmanship with raw conditions, demonstrating our ability to perform under pressure.
Operating drones in heavily secured areas, during bad weather, and under tight deadlines requires expertise, preparation, and experience. Thanks to our dedicated team, robust systems, and well-established procedures, we’re able to deliver exactly what’s needed, even in the most demanding conditions.
