360° Cameras under Drones

Images that don’t just show, but they fully embrace.

A new dimension in aerial cinematography: drones and 360° cameras merge into one immersive experience.

Introduction

This business case describes the use of 360° cameras in combination with drones. The goal is to help clients in the mid- to high-end segment, particularly creative companies and organizations, create a truly unique experience.

Expositions

The use of drones equipped with 360° cameras aims to provide clients with content that creates a fully immersive experience. Traditional drone footage is impressive but limited to a single point of view. With 360° imagery, the viewer feels as if they are standing in the middle of the environment, surrounded by the city, skyline, or landscape. This approach is especially relevant for productions displayed in venues with screens surrounding the audience, where the sense of presence is key. A prime example is the Amsterdam In Motion exhibition, where 360° footage captured by our team was used to bring the walls to life.

Other Usecases

The technology lends itself not only to exhibitions but also to a wide range of other applications:

  • Creative urban productions: unique shots of skylines, canals, and cityscapes.
  • Events and festivals: immersive recordings that place the audience at the heart of the experience.
  • Real estate and architecture: complete spatial impressions of buildings and their surroundings.
  • Tourism and city marketing: promoting cities or natural areas with maximum wow factor.

The technology

For these productions, we use the DJI Inspire 3, a true flagship drone that delivers exceptional stability, allowing for perfectly smooth footage. Mounted beneath the drone is an Insta360 camera, attached using a custom 3D-printed mount. This setup enables recordings of up to 8K resolution, providing image quality suitable for large-scale projections and curved displays.

An example

Next to this text, you’ll find a YouTube video demonstrating how a 360° experience can already be created directly within a web browser. As the video plays, you can drag your mouse or swipe your finger across the screen to explore different angles. This experience can even be enhanced with graphics or animations. Give it a try!

Tested and trusted

The initial investment in equipment has already been made, allowing clients to benefit from this innovative application without significant additional costs. In practice, a flight using a 360° camera is no more expensive than a standard drone flight. Moreover, it’s possible to capture both conventional footage and 360° content simultaneously, giving clients greater value within the same project.

Operational Support and Permissions

An essential part of our offering is complete operational support for the client. We handle all required approvals, authorizations, and permits to ensure legal and safe flight operations. This allows clients to focus solely on their creative vision, while we take care of the technical and regulatory aspects. This approach builds trust and lowers the barrier to working with this innovative technology.

Conclusion

The use of 360° cameras in combination with drones offers creative companies and organizations a powerful way to surprise and engage their audiences. It stands out through its wow factor and its ability to create a sense of presence that traditional footage simply cannot achieve. With proven experience, existing equipment, and a fully managed operational approach, this technology provides a valuable addition to high-end productions. It opens the door to new forms of storytelling, marketing, and immersive experiences.
