Flying drones around Dutch airports

The art of flying where others can't

At Zero Gravity Drone, we regularly operate in CTRs around Schiphol, Rotterdam, and Eindhoven. Professionals are allowed to fly here provided that the rules are strictly followed and thorough preparation is carried out.

How we fly in CRT-Area’s

Stap 1: Certificering & Luchtruimcontrole

All our pilots have the right certifications (A1, A2, A3 and Specific). As soon as a client asks us to fly at a specific location, we first check the situation via map.godrone.nl. This allows us to determine whether additional procedures apply, such as CTRs, no-fly zones, or U-Spaces.

Step 2: Application with LVNL (Air Traffic Control the Netherlands)

For flights in civil CTRs, we submit an application via the LVNL Operator Portal. Our pilots and drones are registered there. For each mission, we enter the location, date, time, maximum flight altitude, pilot, and drone details. After submission, we usually receive a preliminary approval about two days before the flight.

Stap 3: Team & Equipment

In parallel with the application, we assemble the team. In addition to the drone and pilot, a radio operator (RT) is also required, along with the corresponding equipment. At Zero Gravity, we have our own RT pool and communication van.

We also prepare a flight plan that includes all flight details and risk analyses. The day before the flight, we charge all batteries and ensure that pilots get sufficient rest.

Step 4: Day of the flight – The I’M SAFE Check

On the morning of the flight, we receive final approval from LVNL. After that, the entire team performs the I’M SAFE check:

The flight only proceeds once everyone is confirmed ‘safe’.

Three unique CTR challenges in practice

Case 1: Amsterdam (Schiphol CTR)

Objective

Capture drone footage of Arnolduspark in Hoofddorp, located in the most tightly controlled airspace in the Netherlands.

Challenge

Within the Schiphol CTR, only one drone is allowed to fly at a time. This means competing for flight slots, receiving last-minute confirmation from LVNL, and having zero margin for error.

Our solution

  • Timely application via the LVNL portal
  • Clear communication with the client about planning constraints
  • Complete briefing for both the team and the client
  • Use of our experienced RT operators familiar with the Schiphol CTR

Always schedule a backup day

Case 2: Rotterdam (CTR + Harbour-U-Space)

Objective

Capture a series of aerial shots of the Erasmus Bridge and the Rotterdam harbor area at sunrise.

Challange

Rotterdam not only has a CTR, but also an active U-Space in its harbor area.
This means dual regulations and additional digital air traffic coordination via Airwayz.

Our solution

  • Dual application via LVNL and the Airwayz UTM system

  • Automated repeat requests through our internal mission system

  • Direct communication with both harbor authorities and air traffic management

Case 3: Eindhoven (Military CTR)

Objective

Capture inspection footage of a defense-related site located near Eindhoven Airport.

Challenge

Eindhoven has a military CTR, which means standard civil procedures do not apply.
Applications are submitted through the Royal Netherlands Air Force, and each military area follows its own specific protocol.

Our solution

  • Direct application submitted to the appropriate military contact person

  • All military procedures mapped and maintained in our internal database

  • After approval: submission of an official NOTAM to the Ministry of Defence

  • Deployment of pilots experienced in operating within military zones

In conclusion

Flying in controlled airspace (CTR) requires far more than just technical skill — it demands planning, precision, and communication.
Through years of experience and a structured approach, Zero Gravity Drone ensures that every flight — whether near Schiphol, Rotterdam, or Eindhoven — is carried out safely, legally, and with exceptional visual results.
