Flying Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS)

Born out of necessity, not just possibility

In technical terms: Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) flying is a specialism where a pilot operates a drone without maintaining direct visual contact with the aircraft. The pilot relies entirely on the camera feed and telemetry data. Learn all about the challenges and possibilities.

Efficiency at a distance

BVLOS flying is essential when working with innovative solutions such as the “drone-in-a-box”: an autonomous system that takes off from a docking station (the ‘box’) to perform inspections or surveillance without the need for a physical presence on-site. However, BVLOS also pushes the boundaries with our standard drones. It allows us to capture or inspect long trajectories in one smooth, continuous motion. Examples include kilometers of provincial roads, dikes, or high-voltage lines, where it is simply impossible for the pilot to keep the aircraft in sight at all times.

The Unique Challenge

Flying beyond sight requires ironclad focus and absolute trust in technology. The pilot is confronted with several critical limitations:

  • No Direct Line of Sight: You lack an overview of the entire airspace to spot other air traffic.

  • No Ambient Sound: You cannot hear approaching helicopters or aircraft.

  • Sensory Isolation: You cannot feel the wind force or gusts affecting the drone.

  • Weather and Orientation: Changes in weather are harder to assess, and the risk of disorientation increases because you lack your own physical frame of reference on the ground.

The Solution: Expertise and Certification

Safety comes first. To perform BVLOS operations, basic A1, A2, and A3 certificates are not sufficient. Even a standard ‘Specific’ certificate is not enough. The key lies in the Specific Extension Module (SEM). By obtaining the BVLOS SEM as an addition to the Specific certificate, a pilot proves they possess the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to perform these complex operations safely within European regulations.

Knowledge Translated into Control

Mastering BVLOS goes beyond merely obtaining the right credentials; it is about the flawless interpretation of data and technology under challenging conditions. By combining this specialized knowledge with our years of flight experience, we transform complex challenges into safe, efficient operations. At Zero Gravity, we don’t fly on guesswork but on pure expertise.

Whether it concerns kilometers of asphalt or autonomous systems: we have the credentials, the technology, and the skills to cross the horizon.
